In 1967 Kathrine Switzer became the first woman to officially complete the Boston Marathon. This fact is significant enough but what makes this even more impressive is that at that point in time, it was an all male race.
Switzer was attacked while trying to complete the marathon. An official who was working at the time assaulted her as she tried to continue running when he realised that Switzer was female. Luckily her boyfriend at the time was on hand to move the official out of her way and allow her to continue with the marathon.
50 years later, Switzer has returned and completed the marathon again at the age of 70. Staggeringly she completed it a mere 25 minutes slower than previously with a time of 4 hours and 44 minutes. This amazing feat is inspiring to all and proves that you truly can do anything that you put your mind to. Despite other people’s actions and opinions.
