This year we are buying gifts early
Brits are buying Christmas gifts earlier than ever to beat the crunch and
bag a bargain
But eight out of ten say they have less money to spend on Christmas this
year
Come December 25th, it will all seem worthwhile. But with one third of the
cash-conscious population already cramming the stores in search of Christmas
present bargains, the sensible money is on starting early this year.
Probably the only 'crunch' anyone actually wants to experience over the
festive season is the crunch of their boots through a blanket of new fallen
snow. But it's that decidedly un-festive 'other' crunch that's prompted 25%
of Brits to hit the shops earlier than usual for presents. They admit money
is tight and they can't afford to blow their budgets, and a fifth believe
they will save money by shopping earlier. Eight out of ten people say they
feel they have less money to spend on Christmas this year, according to the
research by Lloyds TSB Airmiles Duo card.
This is great news for shops offering deals and special offers in the run-up
to Christmas. More than three quarters of people say they will take full
advantage of reward schemes. Half of us are resigned to the fact that we
can't be as generous this year as we were last year.
Britain's gone bargain barmy, and getting the most out of thrift is at the
top of most people's shopping lists.
Said Jasmine Birtles, financial expert and TV presenter, "November is only
just upon us, but cash-strapped Brits have started their Christmas shopping
early this year in a bid to stick within their budget. Research found that
majority of Brits will be forced to cut their Christmas spending because of
the impact of the credit crunch on household finances. But one in three has
got their shopping underway because they believe starting early will stop
them from overspending."
