Holiday Reservations!
From insects to vaccinations, bashful Brits invent 1,001 excuses NOT to go.
Right now there can't be many of us who wouldn't jump at th prospect of a sunkissed holiday somewhere far away. Or can there? Sun and sea cast a seductive spell, but language barriers, pre-trip injections, culture clashes and exotic creepy crawlies all present barriers to longed-for foreign travel in the minds of us bashful Brits.
A new survey reveals that over a quarter of us get the heebie-jeebies at the thought of outsized insects deciding they're going to have us for lunch. A fifth of us swoon at vaccinations for tropical lurgies.13% clam up when confronted with other languages, and one in ten of us would rather stay put than have to deal with a culture we just don't get.
That said, we remain prepared to 'man up' and take the plunge if the potential holiday looks like it's really going to be worth the effort. The lure of great weather is the most effective cure for pre-vacation vexation - for 78% of people it's the thing that gives them the final push.
However the one thing that can make us forget about all these things and still leave us 'hungry' for holidays is the food. Two thirds of us say that the thought of feasting on fabulous foreign food stops us having reservations about travel and gets us making reservations for it instead.
So. We're over ourselves and we're making the trip. The only question remaining is: where to? The survey by South African Plums confirms this year's trend for visiting unusual holiday destinations. Eastern Europe finds favour with many, while nearly half of holidaymakers admit to feeling the pull of sunny South Africa.
